The disaster film “Sinkhole” directed by “The Tower” director Kim Ji-hoon was released in South Korea last weekend.
“Sinkhole” set the highest annual record of a Korean local film at the box office of 5.58 million U.S. dollars (about 36.12 million yuan).
It is only lower than the two Hollywood films “Fast and Furious 9” and “Black Widow“.

The ordinary Park Dong-won (played by Kim Sung Kyun) and his family moved into a house after 11 years of labor.
They held a housewarming party and invited all their friends.
But the downpour of the whole night created a very large sinkhole, engulfing the entire house and the people in it in just one minute.
In the depths of the cave, Park Dong-won and his neighbor Jeong Man-soo (played by Seung-won Cha) and guests are looking for a way out.
It started to rain again, and the water filled the sinkhole. They must find a solution before time runs out…
“Sinkhole” opened last Wednesday, with a five-day performance of 7.77 million U.S. dollars, which is already the 8th highest in the Korean market in 2021.
The last time the Korean market performed such a good film was June’s “Black Widow“.
“Black Widow” at the first weekend of 8.88 million US dollars, with a cumulative box office of 25 million US dollars, temporarily ranking first in the Korean market for the year.
The political thriller “Escape from Mogadishu” ranked second at the weekend at $2.85 million, with a cumulative box office of $19.1 million, temporarily ranking second in the South Korean market for the year.

“The Suicide Squad” ranked fourth at $367,000, with a cumulative box office of only $3.43 million.
