Extended Reading:

History tells us that Richard III died in a duel with Henry Tudor on August 22, 1485, becoming the last king to die on the battlefield, and that Shakespeare’s play “Richard III” made the English king widely known.

With the rise to power of Henry VIII and the introduction of the Reformation, many monasteries in England were razed to the ground and the exact location of Richard III’s tomb is no longer known.

It was not until 2012 that a team of archaeologists, using map-sourcing and ground-penetrating radar techniques, identified a municipal parking lot in the center of Lestat, England, as the location of the Franciscan church where Richard III was buried in the historical record.

Combining historical information and through DNA matching with Michael Ibsen, a descendant of Richard III, it was determined that the male bones found by the archaeological team were the remains of Richard III.
