The original book was inspired by the real life of British explorer Henry Worsley. Henry Worsley was a dutiful husband, father, and officer who believed in honor and sacrifice.

But at the same time he’s also a ghost, obsessed with Ernest Shackleton his whole life.

Ernest Shackleton was a 19th-century polar explorer who tried to be the first person to land on the South Pole and later traveled across the South Pole on foot.

Although ultimately unable to complete his journey, he saves his companions from the brink of death time and time again.
