“Young Woman and the Sea” is based on Glenn Stout’s book of the same name, written by Jeff Nathanson (“The Lion King” “Happy Endings” “Catch Me If You Can”), and focuses on Gertrude, the first woman to swim across the English Channel “Trudy” Ederle.

Ederle’s father, a German butcher from Manhattan, was an elite swimmer who won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics, which also prompted her decision to try to cross the English Channel.

In 1926, 20-year-old Ederle swam 21 miles, a feat that only five men had done before.
