News

Recently, Thierry Fremaux, artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival, said in an exclusive interview with the media “Variety” that they had previously stated that they did not exclude Russian films, but did not invite institutions associated with the Russian government to participate.

So far, the selection committee has not seen any Russian films that could be selected for the official section.

Cannes: No Russian films selected for official section

Fremaux said that the official unit list of the 75th Cannes Film Festival will be announced on April 14, but he is still working overtime these days to watch a lot of works, especially those new films by world-renowned authors and directors, which are given to the selection committee. It’s very late.

The selection committee has received more than 2,000 films, and Fremaux expects the main competition to be around 20 films. There will still be a premiere section this year, but there will be no “climate films”.

“A Certain Regard” films are expected to be down from last year, returning to regular numbers.

Fremaux once again emphasized that it will cooperate more closely with Hollywood studios, and for the independent production part of the United States, Fremaux said that it has a solid cooperation habit with A24, Neon and FilmNation.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, and the official will follow the habit of holding a “milestone” celebration every five years in the past. This year there will be a grand celebration on May 24th.

This year, there will be more new films by directors from countries/regions that have rarely been shortlisted in Cannes before, as well as more outstanding female directors.
