Makoto Shinkai’s new animated film ‘Suzume no Tojimari’ was released in Japan on November 11 and collected 1.91 billion yen ($13.7 million) at the local box office in the first three-day weekend, better than the 2019 ‘Weathering With You’ opening weekend of 1.65 billion yen, setting a new Makoto Shinkai movie opening new record. At the same time, the film’s word of mouth also performed well.

The film is set in the ruins of various parts of Japan and tells the story of Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who embarks on an amazing journey to various parts of Japan to “close the door” and obtain liberation and growth from the adventure.

Nanoka Hara voices the female lead Suzume, Hokuto Matsumura voices Sōta Munakata, and Eri Fukatsu, Shôta Sometani, Sairi Itô, and Kana Hanazawa are co-voiced.
