The film is based on the classic novel of the same name by John Williams, it is set in the 1870s in the United States, about the student Will Andrews by Emerson’s influence, in order to find the original connection between man and nature, from Harvard University dropout to the American West.

He arrived in a deserted town called “Butcher’s Ferry” in Kansas, when cowhide coats were all the rage in American high society, making the buffalo hide trade a business that could make people rich.

Andrews befriends hunter Miller (Nicolas Cage) in town and learns a legend about a large herd of American buffalo hiding in a valley in the Rockies. He wanted to know more about the wilderness, so he joined the adventure of tracking down this group of American buffalo.

It was a very arduous journey, but eventually they found the legendary fertile valley of paradise. Once there, they began to indulge in the slaughter of buffalo, and their devotion made them forget the time.

Winter quickly enveloped the valley and trapped them, and the long confinement, isolation-induced agitation, cold, and hunger almost drove them crazy.

It was not until spring that they woefully returned to the town of Butcher’s Ferry, only to find that the place had changed as much as they had.
