Snow White star Rachel Zegler agrees that live-action remake is politically correct

Snow White star Rachel Zegler agrees that the live-action remake is politically correct.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actress commented on the upcoming adaptation of the Disney animated classic, saying: “People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is – because it needed that.

“It’s an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’.”

The star previously expressed her excitement at being cast in the role, despite some deeming her unsuitable for the part due to her race.

“Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me,” she said. “You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent, even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries.”

The film, which is being written by Greta Gerwig (Barbie) and Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train), will see Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot play the Evil Queen, with Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) serving as director.

Speaking on Zegler’s casting, Webb, who also directed 500 Days of Summer, said: “Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.”

Zegler shot to fame following her role as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, a performance which won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Her other upcoming projects include The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

The DCEU film has undergone several changes in release dates, with the most recent delay pushing the film back to March 17, 2023.

Snow White will be released on March 22, 2024.
