Christopher Nolan on Sticking to Film: Higher Resolution, Better Color Representation

Due to the cost of production and a variety of factors, there are not many directors who still insist on shooting films on film today, Christopher Nolan is one of them, and he recently talked about his reasons for insisting on shooting on film.

Films shot on film have higher resolution and better color rendering in video formats. So if you want to make a film that looks real, a film that is visually realistic, film photography is by far the best analog for viewing with the naked eye. So film is a very important medium to carry forward.

Digital photography is especially suitable for specific styles of films, animated films or films with strong colors and so on. But I think that if you make films that want to preserve the original look of the world as seen by the naked eye, those delicate and vivid visual sensations, film is the best choice.

I (Nolan) feel that mostly because of financial and industry issues, film is undervalued, and that’s not a good thing at all. Digital distribution has advantages in many ways, especially in maintaining consistency in film quality, which is difficult to do with film. The best form of viewing for finished films continues to be well-maintained film. I think it’s very important for film creators to recognize this and maintain this format.
