The North American film market has returned to its pre-epidemic state, with ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ opening box office tops with $143 million

The Northern America film market welcomed the opening of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ last weekend, with media expecting a big weekend at the box office of around $210 million.

This is 30% higher than the same period in 2019 led by ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’, with the market largely returning to its pre-epidemic state.

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ opened at the top of the box office with $143 million, down only about 3% from ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ over the same period.

‘Jurassic World’ the first two Northern America opened at the box office: $208 million and $148 million, respectively.

According to CinemaScore, ticket-buying viewers gave ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ an A- rating, performing better than ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ (B+), on par with ‘Batman’ (A-), and on par with its predecessor, ‘ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’.

Even though the film’s Rotten Tomatoes rating is only about 31%, at the bottom of the “Jurassic series”, but the general audience is still quite popular.

The film opened in multiple overseas markets and grossed $245 million in its first week, led by $55 million (RMB 356 million) in mainland China, with a cumulative global opening weekend of $389 million.

The first ‘Jurassic World’ was Universal’s top-grossing film, drawing a crazy $1.67 billion worldwide in 2015, and ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ also accumulated a whopping $1.31 billion worldwide.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is also more than 30 years old IP

The Tom Cruise-starring action film ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ collected another $50 million in its third week of release to rank second, down 44.5 percent from the previous year, a trend that continues to be outstanding.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Northern America accumulated $393 million, only $4 million less than the annual champion ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, this week will take the Northern America annual box office champion.

The film accumulated $747 million worldwide, ranking third worldwide for the year behind ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ with $930 million and ‘The Batman’ with $770 million.

It is worth mentioning that ‘The Battle At Lake Changjin II’ ranked fourth with $626 million.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ took in $4.88 million in its sixth week of release, ranking third, with Northern America accumulating $397 million and $930 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film worldwide during the epidemic.

The animated ‘Bob’s Burgers: The Movie’ was ranked fourth with $2.33 million in its third week of release. 27.08 million was accumulated in Northern America and $28.84 million worldwide.

‘The Bad Guys’ ranked fifth with $2.24 million in its eighth week of release, Northern America accumulated $91.52 million and $223 million worldwide (289 million RMB cumulatively on the mainland).
