“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” audience word of mouth collapse, the official close score

According to media reports, Amazon has suspended the user rating feature for all content on its streaming platform Prime Video for three days, including the ‘The Lord of the Rings’ spin-off prequel ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, which has just started airing not long ago. Such a delay helps avoid rating bombing, or the act of flooding a particular show, movie, game or book with negative reviews, the media wrote.

An Amazon representative spoke to the media and said they developed the strategy to give the service time to evaluate whether user reviews were from actual viewers, rather than bots or spammers trying to hijack ratings.

Amazon rolled out the policy earlier this summer, applying it first to the ‘A League of Their Own’ episode reboot, in an attempt to fight rating bombers who oppose the show’s political stance.

‘The Rings of Power’ had similar problems, where some viewers were very critical of the episode because of the casting. The series is based on another work by Tolkien, the original author of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series, and is also a prequel to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series, set in the Second Age of Middle-earth.

Amazon said the episode drew 25 million global viewers on its premiere day, making it Amazon Prime Video’s biggest premiere to date.

But despite Amazon’s efforts to stop bad reviews on its platform, that still hasn’t stopped Ring of Power from being bombarded on other sites, including Rotten Tomatoes and Amazon-owned IMDb.

The episode currently has a 39% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while 24% of reviewers on IMDb gave it only one star.
