Hollywood Responds to US Constitutional Abortion Rights Removed

The U.S. Supreme Court has voted to overturn the 50-year old ‘Roe v. Wade’ decision. This means that states will be able to enact their own abortion laws, and it is expected that several states will ban legal abortion.

“The court found that the right to abortion is not deeply rooted in American history and tradition. The Constitution does not grant a right to abortion, and the power to provide for abortion now reverts to the people and their elected representatives.”

A number of Hollywood film and television personnel responded to this.

Elizabeth Banks, actress and director: Everyone can have a gun, but everyone doesn’t have physical autonomy, and that’s America.

Actor and director Patricia Arquette: This Supreme Court is an absolute disaster, from giving people the right to bear arms to taking away a woman’s autonomy over her own body. We didn’t act on it, we knew this was going to happen.

Actor and director Aisha Tyler: It’s a dark day in American history when the Supreme Court destroyed a woman’s right to make choices, an outcome that will shake up women’s lives, make children and families poorer, increase the financial burden on men and destroy the American economy. This is a terrible disaster for all of us.

Producer Shonda Rhimes: It’s really happening.

Writer and screenwriter Stephen King: The best kind of Supreme Court, the kind that didn’t even exist in the 19th century.

Actress Alyssa Milano: If legal abortion were banned nationwide, birth-related deaths would increase by 21 percentage points nationwide, and this would increase by 33 percentage points among black women.

A ban on abortion would disproportionately affect “people of color,” the LGBTQ+ community, those who can’t make ends meet, young people, and those living in rural areas.
