“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” hits the top with $190 million, Northern America Films of summer holiday off to a good start

According to the industry practice of Northern America, the first weekend of May is the beginning of the summer season. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, which opened on May 6, topped last weekend’s box office chart (accurate data) with US$187.4 million, setting the highest opening score for Northern America this year. $260 million for “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which hit theaters last December.

In addition to the results of 49 overseas markets around the world, the film’s global opening weekend was 450 million US dollars, which is also the second highest since the epidemic.

It seems that adding the trailer for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” at the end of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has an immediate effect.

When the global epidemic is not completely over, how good is the opening result of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”?

Some data can be compared: in 2016, “Doctor Strange” opened for only 85.05 million US dollars, and the sequel directly doubled; 187 million in Northern America’s opening score ranked 11th in film history, second only to “Avengers: Age of Ultron‎” of 191 million.

It is worth mentioning that “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is also the best opening drawing of director Sam Raimi’s work, which is higher than the $151 million of “Spider-Man 3” in 2007.

The funny thing is that it was Sam Raimi who started the superhero blockbuster’s commercial glory journey. In 2002, he directed “Spider-Man”, which was the first blockbuster in Northern America’s film history to break the billion dollar (114 million). This year’s film 20th anniversary of its release.

It was the success of “Spider-Man” in 2002 that moved Northern America’s summer vacation schedule from Memorial Day (May 30) to the first weekend of May. “The Avengers‎” was released on May 4, 2012.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, 87% on Popcorn, B+ on CinemaScore, and 7.5 on IMDb, which is not considered a very high rating in MCU.

Such a high opening of Northern America shows that on the one hand, the outbreak of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” helped the film, and on the other hand, it also shows that the Northern America market has recovered quite well.

With the exception of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, other films did just fine at the box office. “The Bad Guys” finished second with $9.57 million in its third weekend. The film grossed $57.37 million in Northern America and $148 million worldwide.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” took third place with $6.01 million in its fifth weekend, with Northern America accumulating $169 million and the world accumulating $349 million.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” finished fourth with $4.26 million in its fourth weekend, with Northern America accumulating $86.32 million and the world accumulating $364 million.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” finished fifth with $3.52 million in its seventh weekend, with Northern America accumulating $41.77 million and the world accumulating $45.63 million.

Only one new film released this week on a large scale
