“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” will be released in theaters on April 15 next year. Mads Mikkelsen will succeed Depp as the role of Grindelwald.

Fans and critics put increasing pressure on Warner Bros. to ask Johnny Depp to withdraw from the series.

In 2020, after losing a defamation case, Johnny Depp agreed to withdraw from the “Fantastic Beasts” crew.

Johnny Depp appeared at the 69th San Sebastian Film Festival yesterday, criticizing “Cancel Culture”, saying “No one is safe.”

“Cancel Culture” refers to the phenomenon that public figures on social media are collectively boycotted by public opinion because of “problem” speech or behavior. “Problems” usually include crimes, racial and gender discrimination, historical disputes, etc.

The celebrities who were initially “cancelled” were mostly involved in some serious “crimes.”

For example, Kevin Spacey and American producer Harvey Weinstein, who were exposed to the sexual assault scandal.

Their resistance is considered by many to be “deserved of their sins” and “holding the powerful to be responsible for their actions.”

This year, “Cancel Culture” intensified.

The cancelled objects gradually shifted from celebrities to writers, scholars and even ordinary people.

The author of “Harry Potter” J.K. Rowling was criticized for discriminating against transgender people for posting views on transgender on social media.

The two major fan sites of “Harry Potter” issued a joint statement announcing that they would draw a line with J.K. Rowling.

Last year, 150 writers and scholars including “Harry Potter” writer J.K. Rowling issued a joint letter condemning “Cancel Culture” for harming freedom of speech.

The joint letter stated that “public humiliation, collective rejection, and blind moral values” are not conducive to fairness, justice and rational debate in society.

They also mentioned that social media can indeed make positive changes in society, but it cannot lose the environment for public debate.
