Northern America Labor Day weekend box office hits record low, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ hits Northern America Top 5

Last weekend Northern America celebrated Labor Day weekend and the exact numbers are in: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ won again with $6 million, its 15th weekend in theaters. It officially surpassed ‘Black Panther’ to become the fifth highest-grossing film in Northern America’s history. (Source: Boxofficemojo)

The runner-up was ‘Bullet Train’ with $5.71 million and the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ extended version with $5.37 million came in third place.

The Labor Day weekend slot is generally the lowest grossing of the year, with last year’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ opening of $75.4 million being the exception. This year is back to the status of previous years, grossing $53 million or even the worst Labor Day weekend since the 1990s (except for the 2020 epidemic.) The 2019 Labor Day three-day and four-day grosses were $91.7 million and $121 million, respectively.

The good news: Since Saturday was National Movie Day in the U.S. and more than 3,000 theaters offered $3 tickets (about 21 yuan), the total number of viewers actually rose significantly.

The National Association of Theatre Owners reported 8.1 million admissions last Saturday, the highest Saturday attendance of the year. Last year’s three-day Labor Day weekend totaled 7.8 million admissions, and the same period in 2019 before the epidemic was only 8.2 million.

So it seems that the world loves cheap movie tickets. Cinemas nationwide hopes to use this promotion to encourage audiences to go to theaters more often over the next 1.5 months, helping theaters and distribution companies tide over until the next wave of blockbusters comes to save the day.

‘Bullet Train’ finished second with $5.71 million and is expected to take in $6.8 million over the long weekend.

The Brad Pitt-starring film Northern America accumulated $86.24 million and grossed $197 million worldwide, more than twice its $90 million budget.

The extended version of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ grossed $5.37 million for the three days of Labor Day and an estimated $7.6 million for the four days, giving Northern America a cumulative total of $812 million.

As an ensemble film, ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ benefited from the holiday effect, grossing $5.04 million over the three-day weekend (up 21.9% from last weekend) and $6.97 million over four days.

The film Northern America has accumulated $82.3 million at the box office and $161 million worldwide. Considering its $90 million budget, this is not a high number.

Last weekend’s No. 1 ‘The Invitation’ fell to No. 5, with the vampire movie grossing $4.85 million over three days and $5.75 million over four days.

The film Northern America accumulated $13.89 million at the box office and $18.29 million worldwide, with a film investment of $10 million.

The 3D and IMAX re-release of Steven Spielberg’s classic ‘Jaws’ took in $2.63 million over three days, with an estimated $2.73 million for the long weekend, placing it 10th.
