Another Korean drama “The Silent Sea” on Netflix starts airing: it’s worth watching but it should not be able to surpass “Squid Game”

Earlier this year, a Korean original drama “Squid Game” on Netflix became not only one of the biggest international hits in the past few years, but also the most popular original show in Netflix history.

In the 28 days before “Squid Game” launched its streaming service, Netflix users spent more than 1.6 billion hours watching the TV show.

Therefore, it is not surprising that viewers have begun to look for the next large foreign language phenomenon on Netflix.

Perhaps it may have already appeared in the form of another Korean TV series called “The Silent Sea”.

“The Silent Sea” is playing on Netflix

To be honest, it is not fair to compare “The Silent Sea” and “Squid Game”. The two shows are of different genres.

“The Silent Sea” tells the story of a team of astronauts entering space and retrieving an important sample from the moon base.

The show landed on Netflix a few months after “Squid Game” debuted, and the two stars of the show also starred in “Squid Game”.

Netflix first ordered “The Silent Sea” at the end of 2019.

The play was adapted from the 2014 short film of the same name, and the director of that short film, Hang-yong Choi, returned to direct the play.

At the end of 2020, Netflix confirmed the candidates of Doona Bae, Yoo Gong and Joon Lee.

Unfortunately, the comments on “The Silent Sea” are not entirely glorious.

Here is what Dais Johnston said in a drama review written for Inverse shortly after its premiere last week:

The difference between “The Silent Sea” and “Squid Game” is that it tries to be countless other stories, but it lacks the vision and scope that the latter has just right. “Squid Game” is about games, and it is not burdensome to others. “The Silent Sea” talked about too many things and none of them were fully developed.

This is not to say that the show is not worth watching, but if you think “The Silent Sea” can surpass “Squid Game” then you may have to control your expectations.
