One person plays a thousand roles. How do these actors do it?

When it comes to film and television makeup and styling, people often understand it as facial modification.

But in fact, makeup and styling should be the modification of the whole body in a broad sense, including the matching of clothes, the design of hairstyles, the modification of faces, the matching of accessories, and so on.

According to different purposes and requirements, the overall modeling style of the characters is designed.

Use professional tools and materials, and use professional techniques and methods to decorate people’s faces and bodies.

Of course, it also includes the actor’s own changes to the body, so as to achieve a certain film and television visual effect.

I believe that when watching a movie, many viewers will generally pay attention to the story or plot of the film first, and then pay attention to the lens language, performance style, artistic makeup and other content.

However, since the film officially entered the industrial age, film and television makeup and modeling have become one of the important means to beautify and change the image of actors.

It is precisely because of these different technical or non-technical means that we can see and remember the various characters and roles in the history of film.

Today, from the perspective of makeup and styling, I counted ten actors whose images have changed dramatically in Hollywood movies to see what methods they have used to achieve “one person with a thousand faces”.

  1. Tilda Swinton has played three roles in “Wind Wind” directed by Luca Guadagnino.

The first character is naturally the principal of the ballet school who is the protagonist most recognizable by the audience.

The second is an old witch with rotten skin.

But her third role in the film is an 82-year-old male with the help of Oscar-winning makeup artist Mark Coolier.

Makeup artist Kullier once told The New York Times that he used a prosthesis to make Swinton’s neck thicker, making her chin look fatter and more masculine.

In order to turn her into an old man, Swinton spends 4 hours in the makeup chair every day to dress up.

In order to completely transform into a male role, Swindon even personally asked Kuril to equip her with male reproductive organs.

  1. The legendary makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji returns and portrays Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in the historical biographical film “Darkest Hour” directed by Joe Wright.

The film not only won the 90th Oscar for Best Actor for Oldman, but also won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyle for Kazuhiro Tsuji.

  1. In order to play the serial killer Irene Warnos in the movie “Monster” directed by Patty Jenkins, Charlize Theron gained more than 27 pounds. She also wore brown contact lenses and dentures.

Theron’s transformation earned her the 76th Academy Award for Best Actress. However, for Theron, her performance is always more important than her body.

  1. Before the filming of the psychological thriller “The Mechanic” directed by Brad Anderson, Bell “Spring Man” spent four months on weight loss.

In the film, he played an insomniac who fell into a painful cycle of paranoia and guilt after a work argument.

Bell lost more than 50 catties for the film, and his overall weight dropped to 110 catties when filming started.

  1. Matthew McConaughey played the role of Ron Woodruff, an electrician in “The Dallas Buyers Club”, for which he lost more than 40 catties.

In 1985, the 35-year-old Woodruff was diagnosed with AIDS. He smuggled unapproved drugs to Texas to treat AIDS patients.

In an interview with the BBC, McConaughey stated that in order to lose weight, he “chewed a lot of ice” to replace natural eating habits. “I did it in the healthiest way I found.”

  1. Margot Robbie dressed as Elizabeth I in “Mary Queen of Scots” shocked many audiences.

Makeup artist Jenny Shircore talked about this process in an interview with Deadline. She said that Elizabeth’s struggle with smallpox in real life became the basis for Robbie’s facial makeup.

  1. Jared Leto added 60 pounds to Mark Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon in the independent film “Chapter 27”.

8.Marion Cotillard dramatically transformed into French national treasure singer Eddie Piaf with the biographical film “La môme”, and won the 80th Oscar for Best Actress and Best Make-up for this role prize.

In order to imitate the singer’s hairstyle, she had to shave off her eyebrows and part of her hair.

In addition, Marion Cotillard must completely change his voice, practice lowering a few tones, and put on makeup for 5 hours a day.

Strict practice and posture performance make her look as thin and weak as Edith Piaf. Cotillard later revealed that it took her several months to separate from her role.

  1. In the movie “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” directed by David Fincher, Rooney Mara and makeup artist Pat McGrath, costume designer Tracy Somerville and hair stylist Dani Luo cooperated and turned into a hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Her transformation included shaving her head, dyeing the remaining hair black, bleaching her eyebrows, and agreeing to have multiple body piercings.

Part of the reason why Mara’s transformation was so popular was that she was not well-known at the time. Her most famous roles were supporting roles in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “The Social Network”.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was the first time she starred in the role, she was not afraid to plunge into the character’s body, which made her quickly become a professional actor.

  1. The most recent character that shocked the audience by makeup and styling was Martin Sheen’s former FBI director J Edgar Hoover in “Judas and the Black Messiah”.

Martin Sheen’s character was almost completely changed so that many viewers did not know it was him when the first official trailer was released.

In an interview with ABC News, he said that accepting Hoover’s role is a challenge, and has nothing to do with the time required to become a former FBI director.
