Anime movie ‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie‎’ releases new promotional photos, Princess Peach

A new poster has been released for ‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie‎’, an animated feature film that serves as the second movie adaptation of the Nintendo video game series. On Monday, Nintendo and Illumination announced that the second trailer will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as part of the next Nintendo Direct. To tease the trailer, a new poster has also been released, taking fans inside Princess Peach’s castle. While the princess is missing, perhaps kidnapped by a certain king of the koopas, we can presume that we’ll be seeing more of them when the trailer arrives on Tuesday.

Anya Taylor-Joy provides the voice of Princess Peach for the animated movie, joining Chris Pratt’s Mario and Charlie Day’s Luigi. The voice cast also includes Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike. Video game voice actor Charles Martinet is also providing a cameo voice role in the movie, though it’s not yet clear which character he’ll be playing.

“It’s so much fun,” Taylor-Joy has said of her work on the film, via Extra. “I have unlimited amounts of respect for the work that goes into it, because these artists are just incredible.”

Happy that her “research” for this role meant playing Nintendo, the actress added, “I’m a little bit lazy in some ways, so I enjoy doing things for ‘homework’ or ‘research’ like playing a video game. ‘I’m working, you can’t interrupt me, I’m playing!'”

Meanwhile, Chris Pratt’s voice role as Mario has not been without its controversy. Some have suggested that Pratt isn’t the best person to get the role, such as voiceover artist Tara Strong wondering why Charles Martinet wouldn’t have voiced Mario for the film as well. But there are others who are involved with the movie that are defending the casting, feeling that fans will be happy with it once the film is actually released. Perhaps we’ll hear more of the voice in action in the new trailer coming this week to get a better idea of how he will sound, as the first trailer didn’t reveal much.

“Chris was cast because we felt he could give a great performance as Mario,” producer Chris Meledandri recently stated in June. “And now that we’ve done about 15 recording sessions, and the movie is three-quarters done, I sit here and say that I love his performance as Mario.”

Khary Payton, who voices the Penguin King, would later go on to say earlier this month, “People always overreact online… I actually think that he’s doing kind of like this New York, Italian guy — like a cousin of The Sopranos or something, which, I think, is kind of a fun take on it rather than being, ‘It’s a me, a Mario’.”

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing the movie. Matthew Fogel penned the script. Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto are producing.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released in movie theaters on April 7, 2023.
