The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special isn’t a full-blown MCU theatrical release, but it has one of the franchise’s best Rotten Tomatoes scores.

James Gunn returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+ and it’s Rotten Tomatoes score is better than most other MCU movies. While Gunn’s return to big-screen Marvel fare (possibly his last Marvel movie, since he’s now the head of DC studios) arrives in May 2023 with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the Guardians have a brief outing on Disney+ with a Holiday theme (and naturally, a lot of Christmas music).

In addition to the MCU shows on Disney+, Marvel Studios is also releasing “Special Presentation” features, starting with Werewolf by Night, and now (continuing the Holiday theme) The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special featuring the much-beloved cast of the Guardians movies with the special edition of Kevin Bacon as himself. The MCU is known for its consistently high scores in Rotten Tomatoes, but The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special outperforms traditional expectations.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’s 93 percent score is a full 10 points higher than the MCU average of 83 percent, making it tied for the fourth-highest Rotten Tomatoes score in the MCU behind Black Panther (96 percent), Iron Man (94 percent), Avengers: Endgame (94 percent), Thor: Ragnarok (93 percent), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (93 percent). It outperforms the MCU’s Rotten Tomatoes’s “Top Critic” and Audience averages by an even wider margin, scoring 100 percent with Top Critics (24 points higher than the MCU’s 76 percent average) and 90 percent with audiences (8 points higher than the MCU’s 82 percent average).

Focusing strictly on Gunn’s other Guardians movies, the margins narrow a bit, but The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special still beats (most of) the other Rotten Tomatoes scores. Guardians of the Galaxy’s score is 92 percent and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s score is 85 percent, so The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’s 93 percent beats both, scoring 4 points higher than the 89 percent average. Holiday Special’s 100 percent Top Critic score also beats the 79 percent average by 21 points, but the 90 percent audience score is perfectly tied, with Guardians of the Galaxy’s 92 percent being the highest score of the three.

Considering the MCU’s consistently high performance in Rotten Tomatoes and the high scores for all the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, it may be splitting hairs to compare movies with average ratings in the 80s and the 90s, but The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’s high rating is especially notable given the high bar. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the way to theaters in May 2023, Gunn may have the most impressive string of movies in the MCU when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes.
